Speak Your Truth

Updated: Aug 23, 2023

What does it mean to speak your truth? It is a question that has come up quite a bit for me recently. So let's talk about it. First of all, what does it mean? For me speaking my truth defines being transparent about the events that made me who I am. It means revealing situations that may be uncomfortable to talk about to live a healthier, happier life.

I started writing my truth in a class, and when the words spilled out on paper, they reminded me of my strengths to survive. Before writing my book, my back story, so to speak, was never a topic of conversation. Now the book evokes people to ask questions, and when I share, many people will open up and tell me stories from their past. It is often not what I expected to hear, making me reflect that life is full of untold stories.

We are all very unique; many times, what we see in people is merely the surface of who they really are. Similar to social media, where only great pictures get posted, the ones that did not turn out get tossed aside. People don't talk about the quirks in their upbringing or their relationships. Still, when they do, you can sense the relief in their voice, and they begin to ask themselves questions about how they felt, how did it affect them, and so begins the process of letting go of old stale baggage that they carry around.

Speaking the truth is not about assigning blame or becoming part of a movement. It is mainly about clearing your mind of cobb webs, and damaging tracks buried deep, not allowing you to move forward to become the best version of yourself.

You don't have to write a book or spill your guts to everyone you meet to speak your truth. The process is different for everyone, but one helpful tool is journaling. Simply writing down your thoughts, fears, and insecurities will serve as a relief. So write on, speak your truth in private or public but let go of the mental roadblocks that don't help you and start making room for living your best life.
